Using a play on the common expression “better the devil you know” Soliman explores themes of mysticism, mystery, and fear of the unknown; using the juxtaposition of imagery referencing typical representations of the heavens against the depths of space to invite viewers to consider the contrast between the known and unknown and the potential for disappointment in the heroes we create.
It considers the opposing positions of those faced with the unknown: absolute faith and empiricism and whether it is better to be hurt by the truth or to find comfort in mystery.
