DETAILS +

Malum In Se refers to the concepts of inherently evil or immoral acts as defined by civilised societies as opposed to those which are malum prohibitum; immoral solely because of the codification of the act as such in law. In either case these are concepts created and manipulated by man for self-serving interests and consider highly subjective matters.

Through this work Soliman considers the manipulation of the subjective nature of immortality in society, the imposition of structures of morality as a condition of existence within society, ostensibly based on the common values of what is good and right, evil and immoral and yet structured in such a way as to allow flexibility in interpretation and application of these values.

Through the use of the Looney Tunes signature closing sequence Soliman on the one hand points to the power dynamic of the decision makers who decide concepts of morality and on the other to the idea of resignation and tacit acceptance of the system that seems constructed to allow flexibility to achieve the agendas of and disproportionately benefit the select few; the common refrain “that’s show business” metaphorically embodied in the symbol and begging us to ask is that all folks?
