Utilising the iconic Sealy logo as a symbol synonymous with rest, comfort and relaxation combined with its antithesis in the implication of slovenly indolence, Slob comments on the conceptual idealisation of balance between the two and the implications of falling either side of the spectrum.
The initial perception of the work is shimmering and alluring, evoking endless relaxation in a perfect paradise, a sparkling gem, an object of desire. The jarring realisation of the invective directed at the viewer serves as a visual representation of the critical forces at work, both driving behaviours and casting judgement on self and others.
Through this work Soliman offers commentary on how we perceive success, wants and desires in ourselves and others and the glorification of the pursuit of achievement vs the ideal of balance. Should we want or allow ourselves more? Have we achieved enough? Do we deserve it and how will it be perceived by others?
